We strive to use 100% organic materials and ingredients whenever possible. We're careful about where we source our ingredients, grow many of them ourselves, and partner with other small, non-GMO farms to support a more sustainable world.

While all of our products are non-toxic and natural, we don't label them as 100% organic, since some of the natural ingredients and actives we use aren't classified as organic. For example, actives like allantoin, hyaluronic acid, and certain plant-derived compounds are natural, but since they aren't whole-plant ingredients, they don't qualify for an organic label.

Our Face Silk Serum or Radiance Face Oil are great entry points into the world of biologically-formulated, non-toxic skincare. These oils contain actives that boost cellular regeneration, plump fine lines, and moisturize deep into the epidermis.

Several of our customers build their routine by combining products from different skin collections. It's a great way to mix and match based on your specific needs. Use our skin type filters to find natural skincare products that best match your skin.

Several essential oils should be avoided at ratios above 3% such as:
Aniseed, basil, birch camphor, clary sage, hyssop, mogwort, oak moss, parley seed or leaf, pennyroyal, peppermint, rosemary, rue, sage, tansy, tarragon, thuja, thyme, wintergreen, wormwood. Fortunately, we formulate with less than
1% with these oils. Keep in mind using 100% essential oils on skin is not
recommended, pregnant or not.

While there are several essential oils to avoid at higher percentages, these are safe and have been known to help during pregnancy: cardamom, ginger, frankincense, German or Roman chamomile, lavender, neroli, petitgrain, rose or rosewood, geranium, lemon, patchouli, sandalwood, wild orange

The remaining products at ModernRoots are safe to use for pregnancy or breastfeeding. In fact, we have several items for this beautiful time of your life and are here to support your growing family.

It is important to note, not all women like smells during pregnancy. This is a case by case situation and during this sensitive time, individuals can become more sensitive to ingredients compared to when
they are not pregnant. Be sure to checkout our scent free options.

Our products have a shelf life of 24 months. Shopping directly from us (online or in-store) ensures you're getting the freshest natural skincare ingredients and products. If you notice an unusual or unpleasant smell, that's a good sign the product has exceeded its shelf life and should be replaced. If you're ever unsure, we're happy to help, just get in touch.

Ingredients we don't grow or harvest ourselves are sourced from farms we trust. These farms undergo rigorous testing for cleanliness, quality, efficacy, and sustainability. We build lasting relationships with these farms, forming a community of non-GMO farmers and entrepreneurs committed to providing safe, effective, clean ingredients.

Our essential oils go through this same sourcing process and are all certified organic, carrying the following awards and seals: ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, GMP, HALAL, HACCP, Certified Kosher, and Cruelty/Animal-Testing Free.

Double cleansing simply means washing your face twice as part of a natural skincare routine. For some, this helps clean pores more thoroughly, reducing their appearance and helping prevent them from enlarging over time. Many of our customers love pairing our Blue Tansy Oil Cleanser with our Milk Kefir Face Wash for a deep clean without the dryness.

This routine may be a good fit if you're concerned about pore size, want an extra-gentle deep clean, or wear makeup that needs a little more help fully coming off.

People who are sensitive to natural deodorant typically have a sensitivity to bicarbonate of soda (baking soda). While it's highly effective, the reaction can be too harsh for some, sometimes causing rashes or redness in the underarm area. We offer a diatomaceous earth version that's much gentler and better suited for sensitive skin.

As a tip, it's best to wash your armpits before bed rather than apply deodorant then. Your glands need room to breathe and detox, just like the rest of your body, and sleep plays a key role in that process.

We primarily use essential oils, absolutes, and plant extracts for our scent profiles. However, we also use scent blends in some of our soaps and lotions to create effective, non-toxic, viable products for those with sensitivities to essential oils, including cancer survivors and young children, who can be especially sensitive to strong scents and actives.

All of our products are paraben- and phthalate-free. We never use ingredients considered endocrine disruptors, silicones, or sulfates.

Yes! ModernRoots is 100% gluten-free.

Our preservatives are natural and plant-derived, and we use vitamins and ferments to help preserve our formulas, the same types of preservatives used by many organic food companies. We also offer several preservative-free products.

ModernRoots products are handcrafted, non-toxic skincare made in small batches right here in Minnesota. Many of our ingredients are grown on our own farm, and the rest are sourced from small, trusted, non-GMO farms we've built relationships with over the years. Every formula is developed and tested with the same care, whether the ingredient came from our own fields or a farm we partner with.
